Freedom of Information and Open Government Laws
The federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and its state equivalents such as Maryland’s Public Information Act (MPIA) requires the government to disclose unreleased information that it controls. Related laws cover the public’s and media’s right to access government meetings. Freedom of information and open government laws are a valuable tool for media, organizations and others pursuing government transparency and accountability to attend meetings and to obtain records, documents and other materials as part of their research, advocacy, and investigative activities. When she was a journalist herself, Attorney Wolcott successfully filed freedom of information requests with local government as part of her work. Since then, she has supported media, civil society, and other individuals file such requests.
